Integral Chakra Psychology

Chakras are not just the epicentres of our energy. As energy, they are also the locations of our multiple potentials. Potentials create possibilities, possibilities create goals, goals lead to expectations, and sensitivities.

Expectations and sensitivities determine our actions – fulfilment of expectations leads to the experience of positive emotions and a surge of energy levels, whereas non-fulfilment leads to the experience of negative emotions and a drainage of energy levels.

In a way, thus, the Chakras also play a very important role in determining our behaviour, and Integral Chakra Psychology is a study of behaviour and personalities.

Why Study Integral Chakra Psychology?

An understanding of the reasons for our various behaviours helps us reduce our prejudices about people around us and thus improve the quality of our relations.

Studying Chakra as Personalities:

Psychology is the study of behaviour, and there can be infinite permutations and combinations of behaviour. Simultaneously, one of the applications of behaviour study is for the purpose of resolving psychological issues, commonly understood as Stress and Anxiety. The need here, therefore, is for a structure of studying behaviour that helps explain both behaviour and its multiple applications. Integral Chakra Psychology, as a study of personalities, has the advantage of helping us understand not only the formation of behaviour, but also its relation to the experience of multiple emotions, the concept of infinite potentials, and simultaneously the formation of multiple goals, the formation of our sensitivities & expectations, as well as the various problems experienced at the level of our mind.

Until about half a decade ago, a householder joining the yoga fold was considered taboo. Traditionally, yoga was supposed to be for the renunciate and not a householder. Was this taboo unfounded, or did it have some logical reasons? An understanding of emotions, when studied through the lens of Integral Chakra Psychology, would help understand the precautions that need to be observed while applying certain Yoga practices in life by a householder.
Yoga sutras mention various powers that arise as we work on ourselves through certain Yoga practices and the need to exert certain precautions for the same. A study of Chakra Psychology would help understand the care that needs to be taken while manifesting our potentials (also called the Kundalini energy), in a harmonious, if not harmful, way.
Is Karma the physical part of an action or the thought behind our actions? Do the Chakras control our behaviour, or is it our thoughts that control our chakras? Do we hence have to be in control of our chakras to be in control of our actions, or do we have to just control our thoughts that automatically bring both our karma and our Chakras under our control?
In this section, we will be studying how the Tri-Gunas affect our perceptions and our understanding, and hence our behaviour with the world around us.
Every Chakra involves particular emotions. The intensity of every emotion fluctuates, either depending on the situation or on personal choice. Just like the infinite shades of colour that can be created from varying percentages of the three basic colours, similarly infinite shades of behaviour arise from the permutations and combinations of the emotions of every chakra with those of the emotions of other chakras.
The objective of traditional Chakra Psychology is to detach oneself from the potentials and, simultaneously, the expectations, sensitivities, and emotions of every chakra. This state facilitates a merging of our potentials into the energy of the Universe or Higher Reality, whichever way one would understand it. This state, however, also runs the risk of getting detached from the creations to which a householder is usually attached. Integral Chakra Psychology is thus not about coming out of any chakra, but moderating the potentials of every chakra in a proportion that facilitates the manifestation of our justified creations; a choice reached through the process of reflective Svādhyāya.
